Overview of Mountain Kenya

Mountain Kenya is an exciting and highly invigorating tea, appropriate for those who like a strong cup of tea. For many years, we have offered this small leaf tea sourced from the Tindret Estate in Kenya. Unique in appearance and overall taste, this is one of the finest small leaf teas grown on the African continent.

Our Mountain Kenya tea should be made with cold, filtered water that has been brought to a rolling boil (205-212° F). Using one rounded teaspoon of loose tea or one teabag for each cup required, pour the boiling water over the tea leaves. Mountain Kenys tea should be steeped for 4-5 minutes. Once the ideal brewing time has been reached, the leaves should be removed to prevent further steeping. Decant and enjoy!

My Favorite

I'm pretty picky when it comes to tea, and I don't like anything weak, smoky, or bitter; I prefer smooth full-bodied teas (which I steep 5 minutes and drink with milk). I've tried eight different loose leaf teas from this site, and this is the only one I'm going to reorder.

Aroma: No weird added flavors. Smell before brewing has the slightly odd astringency of many Mark T. Wendell teas, but none of that comes out in the finished product.

Astringency: Not at all bitter, even when I've accidentally infused it for ten minutes.

Brewing time: As with most teas, I brew this for five minutes.

Body: This tea has loads of body. It's probably the strongest non-bitter tea I've ever had the pleasure to taste.

Character: Reminds me of other African teas, especially Taylors of Harrogate's Ntingwe Kwazulu, but more potent.

Flavor: No added flavors. No bitterness, smokiness, wilkness, toastiness, or grassiness. Despite the huge punch of caffeine in this tea, the flavor is mature and mellow. This tea won't jerk you awake; you'll come awake drinking it without noticing the process.

My all time favorite TEA

I have been a loyal customer of Mark Wendell teas for many years! Why? Because their teas are of the highest quality any where. The Mountain Kenya tea is great without sweetener or milk. The flavor is strong and yet NOT bitter unless you steep it too long. I usually a teaspoon of buckwheat honey. I drink it every day of the year and consider it the most flavorful of all the African teas.
