Overview of Yunnan Tea Brick

This decorative brick of compressed Yunnan black tea makes a great display and conversation piece. This was the most commonly produced and used form of tea in ancient China prior to the Ming Dynasty. This type of tea was compressed into brick form for ease of travel across the land. The teas was broken off the brick and then added to boiling water to brew.

Dimensions are 4.5 inches tall by 7.5 inches wide

The Yunnan Tea Brick should be made with cold, filtered water that has been brought to a rolling boil (205-212° F). Using a small knife, break off enough tea to brew. Using one rounded teaspoon of loose tea or one teabag for each cup required, pour the boiling water over the tea leaves. The Yunnan Brick tea should be steeped for 4-5 minutes. Once the ideal brewing time has been reached, the leaves should be removed to prevent further steeping. Decant and enjoy!

Yunnan Tea Brick

I also found the brick extremely difficult to actually break into usable pieces. If I anticipated this, I would have placed the entire brick into a large plastic bag and introduced some leaf material which is fresh and full of moisture. Then, place the bag into a very warm area so that the moisture inside the fresh leaves fills the bag and you can see condensation. Remove the brick from the warm area and place it into a normal area, still inside the plastic bag. Overnight, the moisture should start the enter the brick and make it softer and more easily broken into smaller pieces without turning it into powder. Instructions like these would have been nice if they came with the brick, instead a just a blank piece of paper. It is a stunning looking brick and I want to get another so I can just leave it alone just for looking at.

Yunnan Brick Tea

We can't cut tea off this brick. It's too hard. I've tried a serrated (saw) blade, and every knife I have. What we get is fannings.
