Overview of HU-KWA Tea 1 lb. Tin (Temp Out Till Aug 10-Will Ship Therafter)

We have had the pleasure of supplying discriminating tea drinkers with this delicately smoked Lapsang Souchong tea for over a century. This long leaf tea from the island of Formosa has long been a tea connoisseur’s favorite. HU-KWA is a uniquely smoky and inviting tea that is not to be missed!

Houqua was a famous Hong Merchant from Canton, China, who became a symbol of integrity and quality trade between America and the Orient in the 19th century. Mark T. Wendell’s uncle, Richard Devens, traded goods with Houqua during this era and, years later, named his signature tea after him out of respect for his cultural significance. Almost 110 years later, our trademark tea is still our most popular offering!

Proper Brewing: In order to enjoy the unique flavor of HU-KWA we recommend allowing the tea to draw for five and one-half minutes. Stir, and let the tea settle for about one-half minute. Then decant. HU-KWA Tea is best appreciated when drunk clear. Milk or too much sugar compromises its delicate flavor. A little cream goes well but sugar should be used sparingly.

Wonderful, historic tea

Many years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Anna Palmer North Coit of North Stonington, Conn. who died on Oct. 15, 2014, at the age of 106. She was the descendant of several prominent families in that area and a journalist. I remember her saying to me, "The people of Stonington drink Hu-Kwa tea." I bought some for myself and think of her when I drink it and of the mariners of Stonington who once brought Hu-Kwa tea from China in clipper ships. I love this tea and I love its history.

Decades of Enjoyment

We used to buy this wonderful tea at Jurgensen's in La Jolla during the fifties and sixties. It was always a most welcomed Christmas gift, especially the beautiful tin it was packaged in. My grandmother introduced me to it as a young girl and I have continued to enjoy it all my life.
