Overview of First Flush Darjeeling - 2014 Goomtee Estate, Organic

Comprised of the first tender shoots of the newly grown tea plant, First Flush Darjeeling tea is a seasonal tea offering that is applauded by tea enthusiasts around the world. Our 2014 offering was once again grown at the Muscatel Valley section of the Goomtee Estate, a famed estate located in Darjeeling’s Kurseong South valley. Organically cultivated from pure China tea bushes dating back to 1899, Goomtee maintains extremely high plant cultivation and plucking standards, many which go above and beyond what is required for an organic certification.

Goomtee’s Muscatel Valley teas have an established reputation as being some of the best in all of Darjeeling. Their teas are most prized for their unique ‘muscatels’, comparable to sweet summer wines, with intense fragrant top notes of musk.

This season’s First Flush Darjeeling selection is comprised of an attractive mix of well-rolled green and black leaves with many silver buds. When brewed, it yields a light gold infusion with a uniquely intoxicating muscatel bouquet. Typical of a stand out First Flush Darjeeling, it finishes with a pleasing citrus sweetness on the palate.

Our First Flush Darjeeling tea should be made with cold, filtered water that has been brought to a rolling boil (205-212° F) and then allowed to cool for just less than a minute. Using one rounded teaspoon of loose tea or one teabag for each cup required, pour the boiling water over the tea leaves. First Flush Darjeeling tea should be steeped for 3 minutes. Once the ideal brewing time has been reached, the leaves should be removed to prevent further steeping. Decant and enjoy!

After being a longtime Oolong Tea drinker, I was tempted to step out of my comfort zone just a little with Darjeeling Tea. I was intrigued to try the First Flush Darjeeling after reading how it is cultivated and processed. It is true that this is an expensive tea, but once you understand why and have enjoyed a well brewed cup it is easier to make that decision. I have always preferred my tea strong and dark. Darjeeling Tea is the exact opposite! You want to brew it only 2 to 3 minutes with water heated to about 190 degrees. When brewed too long, it becomes very tannic and dry to the taste. I didn’t believe that it would make that much difference until I had tried it a few times myself. Trust me, it does matter! This tea is light in color and body, but at the same time very complex and intriguing! I like to enjoy it when I ‘m not rushed and can focus on what I’m drinking. It is also one of the few teas I drink without milk, just sugar. It is now a part of my tea rotation when I’m looking for a change of pace with a fine, full bodied tea but still a light and subtle taste.
