brewing-information Description

Comprised of the first tender shoots of the newly grown tea plant, First Flush Darjeeling tea is a seasonal tea offering that is applauded by tea enthusiasts around the world. This first picking (DJ-1) of the 2023 season is produced from the tender 2 leaves and a bud plucked from the Muscatel Valley division, which is the higher elevation and certified organic section of Goomtee Tea Estate.

This tea selection is cultivated with a hard wither at 68%, rolled with light pressure, short oxidation and full firing. This process allows a longer shelf life and yields a cup with full flavor and not just the expected floral and herbaceous aromas.

This loose Darjeeling tea is an exceptional spring picking with a fresh, vegetal mouth feel at the start developing smoothly towards more floral and fruity notes with a delicate astringency. When brewed, it yields a light gold infusion with a uniquely intoxicating muscatel bouquet. Typical of a stand out First Flush Darjeeling, it finishes with a pleasing citrus sweetness on the palate.

Brewing Tips: Our First Flush Darjeeling tea should be made with cold, filtered water that has been brought to a rolling boil (205-212° F) and then allowed to cool for just less than a minute. Using one rounded teaspoon of loose tea or one teabag for each cup required, pour the boiling water over the tea leaves. First Flush Darjeeling tea should be steeped for 3 minutes. Once the ideal brewing time has been reached, the leaves should be removed to prevent further steeping. Decant and enjoy!

I love tea like some people love great art. Having owned a tea room in CA, I found Mark Wendell Teas in 2000 and filled my tea menu exclusively with their teas.

Darjeeling was never my favorite tea because I felt it lacked the body of teas like Assam, but this Darjeeling is simply Heaven! I have been drinking it for over 20 years now, and have turned many people on to this tea who thank me all the time.
I'd say, if you want the best Darjeeling you'll ever experience, go ahead and splurge on this one.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for my order to ship?

We strive to ship orders within 2-3 days of receipt. However, due to the handcrafted nature of our products, combined with inventory limitations, some orders may take longer to ship. If there is a significant delay in shipping your order, we will contact you directly with details.

Are your teas cultivated naturally? Are they Organic?

All our teas are sourced from tea estates, suppliers and importers that we have personally worked with for decades and many for generations! We only purchase teas that have been cultivated naturally, devoid of pesticides and growth agents.

Teas that have the term “Organic” in the products name have gone through additional certification by the country or origin and USFDA. Even though all our products are natural, we are unable to list them as Organic unless they have gone through these steps. Sometimes, this certification can be costly and time consuming for growers. Each country has different regulations, so many sell the teas to us without this extra labeling.

How long does tea stay fresh?

If sealed properly and stored away from extreme hot/cold temps and moisture, tea will stay as flavorful as the day you bought it, even after 18 months.

How long should I brew my tea?

Tea brewing times and water temperature can vary between tea varieties. Please consult this link to find the best method for your tea!
