YiXing Teapots

YiXing Teapots from the Mark T. Wendell Tea Company

YiXing (pronounced “ee-shing”) Teapots fist appeared in the YiXing region of China, during the Sung Dynasty (960-1279 ME). Since then, they have become the preferred tea brewing vessel of the Chinese and of tea drinkers worldwide. YiXing teapots are intended for individual use, producing 1-2 servings of tea. The purple clay (Zisha) from which these teapots are made can only be found in this region of China. The purple clay has unique properties, ideal for brewing tea. The unique color of the clay, sometimes augmented by pigments, are never covered by glazes on the YiXing teapot. Even the inside is left uncoated. The porous nature of the clay absorbs the flavor, smell, and color of the tea that is brewed in it. From repeated use, YiXing teapots develop a seasoning, making the tea brewed from a well used teapot a treat.

To clean this type of teapot, simply empty the leaves and rinse the teapot with hot water. Never use soaps or cleansers, as they may be absorbed by the porous clay and interfere with the taste of your tea.

All of our YiXing teapots are packed in an attractive black and gold box with an information card inside, suitable for gift giving.
